Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

Businesses

  1. What advantages does UpstateConsultants.com offer over staffing firms?
UpstateConsultants.com is owned and operated entirely by IT professionals. When you engage the service of one or more Upstate Consultants, there are no fees to be paid to staffing firms or head hunters. This allows us to extend exceptionally competitive rates for extraordinary talent. In addition, since no head hunters are invloved in the process, there is no incentive to pull out an Upstate Consultant to score another fee.
  2. I only need one or two days worth of top-notch IT work. Do you bother with such small projects?
Yes, we do! In fact, we found that many problems in existing IT operations (e.g., a slow network, a broken mail server) can be fixed (by the right person) in just a day or two.
  3. I need a whole team of experienced engineers. Can you help me?
Chances are, yes. In fact, most UpstateConsultants have worked together before.

Website

  1. Why do your pages look all broken?
All the pages at UpstateConsultants comply with web standards and will therefore be correctly displayed in modern, standards-compliant browsers. If you have trouble viewing contemporary web pages, you may want to consider upgrading to a standards-compliant browser. More
  2. Are the web pages at UpstateConsultants.com accessible to people with special needs?
Yes. Our web pages are fully compliant with the latest web standards. Virtually all formatting (such as colors, borders, etc.) is done by a style sheet, leaving the main body of a page uncluttered. This seperation of content and formatting is needed by special needs web interfaces such as braille or aural interfaces to function properly.
  3. Why don't you use "browser sniffing" to serve pages that are optimized for my browser?
"Browser sniffing" was useful and practical at a time when there were only two widely used browsers (i.e., Netscape and Internet Explorer) and when no web standards existed. Today, there are web standards, as well as dozens of browsers incl. many on platforms other than PCs, e.g., mobile phones and PDAs. It is virtually impossible to test web pages on evey platform. The best chance to produce web content that is accessible by the widest variety of clients is to simply follow web standards.
  4. Why don't you use "traditional" formatting to make your pages also look good in older browsers such as Netscape 4?
Web standards discourage and sometimes even disallow using "traditional" formatting methods such as using spacer images and tables for layout purposes or using colors and fonts that are hardcoded within the page content. These techniques work as long as all web users use the same kind of platform (e.g., personal computers), but make it virtually impossible to view such pages with new devices such as mobile phones or special needs browsers (e.g., braille or aural interfaces.)
